Using an imaginary glass wall, Carlos Fuentes creates a lens through which he examines the violence, discrimination and racism suffered by Mexican immigrants crossing the border into the US in a quest for a better life. In these nine stories that deal with the separation between Mexico and the Unites States, Fuentes is able to find humor even amongst the tumbling ruins of an immigrant s dream.

This is a good novel. HOWEVER, the copy that I received, which was wrapped in plastic, was missing the last twenty pages. It actually reprints twenty pages twice,..and is missing 257-272, I would suspect that my copy is not the only one with this error. Buyer beware when ordering this edition from Amazon, great novel, but I would have liked to read the last twenty pages. Other reviews made no mention of this, wonder why?

If I were just reviewing this collection of short stories, I would give it five stars. If I were reviewing the construction of the book, I would give it 1. Started falling apart after one read! I've had other books in this series and didn't notice a problem, so I guess it just might have been a dud copy, but I was disappointed.

We'll written, very introspective. The topic is interesting, life and times of a border demographic is intelligently dealt with. Excellent.

excellent book, but buying a book from Amazon is an experience like dinning in an unknown restaurant, you run a risk of getting montezuma;s revenge
