Lords and Ladies, . Part of Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. You don't have to listen to a lot of daft old ladies who've never had a life. And, circle lady, I shall be the best witch there has ever been. With my help, I believe you may, said the woman in the circle. Your young man is looking for you, I think, she added mildly.

An impoverished gentlewoman or a sophisticated lady? In 'A Poor Relation', Lord Amburley is curious as to why the shabby Isabella Winstanley passes herself off as a lady of fortune. In 'The Silver Squire', Emma Worthington realises that her chances of marriage are slim - but will she marry an awful rake to save her debt-ridden father?

I found this over contrived with the meeting and "misunderstandings". It has a good plot and well thought characters but it failed to fizzle. I am sure others will find it better but it gets a mediocre three from me. I finished it, but it dragged at the last and I wished it over!

Joanna Maitland's characters are blessed with humor, wit, and imagination. The very end of this story is a bit far fetched but it really doesn't matter. I hope you decide to try this book and enjoy it as much as I did.

Too contrived, too stupid, too shallow. Read like a paint-by-numbers story. I got halfway through and ditched it. I'm not even inclined to detail all the things I hated about this book. Life is too short to engage with rubbish like this.
