Description

I especially love 'Birches' by Robert Frost, 'Hope Is the Thing With Feathers' by Emily Dickinson, and 'The Raven' by Edgar Allen Poe. There are so many great ones in this book that I can't even begin to name them all.

The Treasury of American Poetry. A collection of great American poems. Select Format: Hardcover. ISBN13: 9780760726006. Release Date: January 1993.

Because of the complexity of American life and of America's heritage, it is easier to explain what American poetry is not . 1978- Nancy Sullivan Guild America Books 836 pages isbn: 1568653670 Book is New but Dust Cover shows wear from storage.

Because of the complexity of American life and of America's heritage, it is easier to explain what American poetry is not than to explain what it is. There is, howerver, no denying that the myriad events and personalities which produced this country provoked and shaped a poetic heritage which can only be defined as a national treasure. Not every poem in the anthology is a jewel in the literal sense, but each one, verbal emerald as well as verbal opal, has its intrinsic quality and character.

A balanced selection of short fiction by American writers contains works by more than sixty authors, from Washington Irving and Edgar Allan Po. This is a comprehensive collection of American short stories starting with Washington Irving and going through to Ann Beatie. All of the writers are very well known and I make no attempt to rate the stories. One could make the argument that these are not the best short stories from each author, but as a group it is an impressive collection.

What a great value this book is. It is beautifully bound and contains many of the poems I love. This would be a great book to give as a gift to older children or any adult. I will treasure this one forever.

Where are Maya Angelou, and Langston Hughes. Of course, there is also Pablo Neruda, José Suárez, and many other poets of color. While this is an introduction to the poetry one will read in most American public schools, it is only the tip of the iceberg. There are poets all over the world; nevertheless, to focus on American poetry, this book still misses the poetry, written by ethnic American poets.
