Peter Sinks is a natural sinkhole in northern Utah that is one of the coldest places in the contiguous United States. Peter Sinks is located 8,100 feet (2,500 m) above sea level, in the Bear River Mountains east of Logan, within the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Due to temperature inversions that trap cold nighttime air, it routinely produces the coldest temperatures in the state. Even in the summer, the bottom of the sinkhole rarely goes four consecutive days without freezing

Peter G Mackie was born in Perth, Scotland in 1957 and, as a teenager, was mistakenly kept in the Adolescent Unit of a psychiatric hospital for two and a half years, an experience which affected his whole life and which led him to suffer from depression. Due to problems with his family, he ran away from home at the age of 16 and suffered abuse on the streets of London.

Mackie has creatively structured many of these poems to communicate his erratic state of mind (at the time of writing) and this at least helps to prevent things becoming too stale. The whole thing reads like it was written by someone high on drugs, although this is not necessarily a bad thing, poetically speaking. My favourite poem in this book is entitled: Fruit out of the Realms of Sadness, because it has a slightly different feel to the others. I understand from the blurb that Poems of Youth and Turbulence was written in Mackie's youth, and it shows. Having written poetry in my younger days, I recognised and related to the mis-steps, and found them mostly forgiveable.
