The most persuasively haunted poems here are those where casts herself not simply as a dutiful curator of personal history but a canny medium of fellow feeling and the stirrings of the collective unconscious.

The most persuasively haunted poems here are those where casts herself not simply as a dutiful curator of personal history but a canny medium of fellow feeling and the stirrings of the collective unconscious. it's this charged air of rapt apprehension that gives her spare, fluid lines their coolly incantatory tenor as she warms to the task of channeling disquieting visions and fugitive voices. Tracy K. Smith reads an excerpt from her poem I Will Tell You the Truth About This, I Will Tell You All About It.  . Young had met Smith through the Dark Room Collective, but he didn’t recognize any of the poems in the book, which he read anonymously. You want a poem to unsettle something, Smith told me. She lowered her voice almost to a whisper. It was exciting to come across this book that had such quiet certainty, he told me. It was rock-solid as a book, plain-spoken but fierce. Smith's bold second poetry collection explores history and the intersections of folk traditions, political resistance, and personal survival. Duende gives passionate testament to suppressed cultures, and allows them to sing.

In her second book, Duende (2007), the Smith who danced freely within the sphere of place and history is undone by the real and metaphysical . New poems by Tracy K. Smith and Dana Levin.

In her second book, Duende (2007), the Smith who danced freely within the sphere of place and history is undone by the real and metaphysical responsibilities of the erotic life she has chosen.

The award-winning second collection by the Poet Laureate of the United StatesDuende, that dark and elusive force described by Federico García Lorca, is the creative and ecstatic power an artist seeks to channel from within. It can lead the artist toward revelation, but it must also, Lorca says, accept and even serenade the possibility of death. Tracy K. Smith's bold second poetry collection explores history and the intersections of folk traditions, political resistance, and personal survival. Duende gives passionate testament to suppressed cultures, and allows them to sing.

I had to 'try' this book three times before the book spoke to me and I listened. It will speak more as I listen more and read more. On my first reading i didn't understand why this woman was Poet Laureate of these United States. She is the Poet Laureate because her mind hears things and her words speak things that should be heard. This poet knows words as Maya Angelou knows words. I am 79 and when I grow up I want to use words as these two use words.

I learned who our poet laureate is! Her poems connect one very viscerally with many different cultures. I read one poem at our open mike night and it was very much appreciated.

She has definitely, got my attention. I have started trying to write poetry myself.
I read this book when it was first published. I shared her other book with one of my students who is a young writer and who admires Tracy K. Smith's work.
