Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.

Letters of Frances Hodgkins is a generous selection of letters written by New Zealand's most internationally well-known artist. It shows that Hodgkins deserves not only her considerable reputation as a painter, but also that of a brilliant and engaging writer. The letters reveal Hodgkins' changing moods, impressions and fortunes and provide vivid sketches of the people and landscapes she came across. Spanning from colonial Dunedin to her travels across Europe and North Africa, the letters continue through her final flowering in her 60s and 70s.

In the third section, art and poetry intermingle in the works of some favorite artists—such as Jenny Bornholdt, Sophie Calle, and Deborah Smith—and also in the context of a recent illness. Finally, a long letter-poem to Hawaii-based writer Anne Kennedy ties the main themes together.
