Mystery Writers of America, the premier organization for established and aspiring mystery writers, is dedicated to promoting higher regard for crime writing, and recognition and respect for those who write within the genre. I believe he is in a class of his own which has always appealed to me as a reader of that genre. I choose my books not so much for their price, as their content and will pay more for content fulfilment than cost. Although I like a bargain as well as the next guy, but it's not my criteria for my reading choices.

Some call them vigilantes, others claim they are just another brand of criminal.

When a different kind of justice is needed—swift, effective, and personal—a new type of avenger must take action. In Vengeance, bestselling author Lee Child, “a superb craftsman of suspense” (Entertainment Weekly), presents twenty-one riveting stories from some of today’s top crime writers.

In our dangerous world, offenders cannot always be brought down by the justice system. They must be stopped by someone outside the law. Some call them vigilantes, others claim they are just another brand of criminal.

In Dennis Lehane’s “The Consumers,” a suburban woman hires a hit man to target her husband, who has committed a terrible crime. In Karin Slaughter’s “The Unremarkable Heart,” a dying woman learns the truth about a dark family secret. In Michael Connelly’s “A Fine Mist of Blood,” LAPD Detective Harry Bosch discovers a witness who will lead him to the doorstep of a hardened killer. And in Lee Child’s “The Hollywood I Remember,” an assassin gets his long overdue comeuppance.

Edited and with an introduction by Lee Child, these stories reveal the shocking consequences when men and women take the law into their own hands.

Having just worked my way through all the Jack Reachers I was suffering from Lee Child withdrawal, so I thought I'd give this a go. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. In his introduction, Child writes quite entertainingly about selecting his "fantasy baseball team" of writers, who all agreed to contribute and then "it was about sharpening [his] editorial blue pencil and waiting for their stories to show up". According to Child, the stories didn't require much in the way of editing, and this may well have been the case. But the collection as a whole could have done with a bit of judicious editing. At least, I certainly felt they did when I came to the fourth story about child molesters. There were some excellent stories - Dennis Lehane's The Consumers and Dreda Say Mitchell's The Hotline were my favourites - but too many featured plain old murder as revenge, which is a bit pedestrian and some, like "It Ain't Right" by Michelle Gagnon could have been excised entirely. Quite a few stories had very predictable endings and the ones involving priests (of which there were several) made the mistake of assuming priests have nothing better to do than sit around in the confessional all day on the off-chance that someone might walk in! But these are minor quibbles. Individually, most of the stories range from good to excellent, but as an anthology, they get a bit repetitive. Lee Child's own contribution is fair, but maybe a tad underwhelming for his many Reacher fans.

Pretty hard not to be good with all the fantastic authors

Excellent collection of well written interesting vengeance stories. You will find yourself willing the villain to receive the vengeance that he deserves!
A good bed-time read as each story is short enough to be read start to finish - then you drift off to sleep happy that the scum-bag got the comeuppance that he deserved! :)

The stories were a lot different to what I would normally read. But on finishing the stories and looking back I enjoyed them very much. The fact that they were short ones made it better to see where the authors were going.

MWA produces yet another great collection of stories. This one is about payback (vengeance) and, as has been the case with so many other MWA collections, I had great difficulty putting it down.

I'm not usually an anthology reader; I find that 1 or 2 really good authors rarely make up for the 13 or so that you get as filler. This is different. I was looking for a new author with a series I could get into. Here I found a few. Even the stories that are not "my cup of tea" were entertaining and thought provoking.

Very disappointing. I felt the short stories would reflect the author's genre and writing style - they don't, they are all so different. Some readers might find this refreshing, I recommend reading closely the finer print, I saw Lee Child and just went straight ahead and bought it.
I was looking forward to discovering new authors and may have done so. Have not finished the book yet but have finished six of the stories. Two had promise but the others were very disappointing. One was so far off base, I'm surprised it was chosen to be part of the book. But, I'm still glad I bought the book.
