Here we have crises in high society, the anxieties of snobs, reveries and feverish arguments over music and composers, longings and loves perversely conjured up out of boredom.
Marcel Proust, Louise Varèse
Marcel Proust, Louise Varèse. This was Proust’s first published work, appearing when he was only 25, and it consists of stories, sketches, and thematic writings on a variety of subjects. For me, Pleasures and Regrets (and probably Jean Santeuil, which I've yet to read) is the book one should read after first having read Reserche, and though it stands well enough on its own (though miniaturized and greatly overshadowed by Proust's masterwork) its greatest value today seems to be in charting a course for readers of Reserche to see how that.
He is considered by critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th century.
