This fifth and best of the Rachel Gold mysteries starts with a deception, ends with a surprise and in between involves our heroine in myriad plot twists surrounding a most unusual profit scheme and a most unusual murder. Rachel, spunky and vulnerable, a Jewish attorney with a nose for detection, works her way through all the puzzles most satisfyingly and even ends up close friends with one who started out as an enemy. Rachel is a delight as she peels the layers of the puzzle like a rose and at the end this reader is left with only one question: When will we see the sixth Rachel Gold book?

I've just finished this latest of Michael Kahn's
books, and I eagerly await his next! His characters are so fully developed and interesting. If
you like Marcia Muller, Sara Paretsky, and Sue
Grafton, you'll thoroughly enjoy ALL of Michael
Kahn's books.
This one is the best so far. The
premise alone is so interesting & different! Who
would have thought animal by-products would be a
reason for murder!

The subject matter was not very appetizing. I liked other Michael Kahn novels better, but I urge him to keep writing. I find them all very relaxing and educational.

Rachel gold gets better in every novel. This one is a thoroughly entertaining piece of fiction with an unusual and quite exciting plot.
The characters are very well drawn and I'm really looking forward to the next novel by mr. Kahn.

I think all of the Michael Kahn books are fun reads - great for traveling or the beach, and if you are a St. Louis resident like me - the added perk of recognizable locations is a bonus. I read four in a row - and the repetitious descriptions or comments that some characters make get a bit annoying- but perhaps you wouldn't notice as much if you read them over a longer period of time. Of course, the escapades of the main character when fighting crime can also sometimes be a bit silly. But - what do we expect from this read - very entertaining, fast paced and not great literature.

I began the Gold series with The Finch Factor and liked it so much that I went back and read all of the Rachel Gold books. I have not been disappointed and look forward to reading more of his future endeavors. Michael Kahn has created a smart female attorney with a surrounding cast of likable and able friends. The mysteries are unique, as are the finales. Climb aboard the Rachael Gold fan club bus.
It's a fun read, with believable characters, a well thought out, knowledgeable plot that clips along nicely, with just enough romance - but not too much to get in the way of the "who done it" part. I'm surprised this author isn't more well known and his books in more libraries.
