Three short stories of varying quality. Each is reviewed below:
Dancers in the Dark, is vintage Charlaine Harris. All of her characters, even the supernatural ones are superbly human. If you were a reader of her SVM/Sookie Stackhouse series then you are probably familiar with Sean and Layla, the ballroom dancers who appeared in 'All Together Dead.' They were the featured performers at the Vampire summit in Rhodes. Dancers in the Dark tells the story of how they met. The writing is well done and the story is engaging and the action is, at times, very tense. I liked the characters in 'All Together' and loved this little lagniappe from the SVM world that let's me learn more about them. I would would give it a solid 5 stars.

Her Best Enemy, by Maggie Shayne is less well written and believable than the story that precedes it. The dialog wasn't as crisp and leaned toward repetitiveness. The love scenes were rather oddly placed in the flow of the story and didn't do much to enhance the relationship of the two main characters. I understand that this was a short story, but character development was sadly lacking. I'd only give this story 2 1/2 stars.

Someone Else's Shadow, by Barbara Hamby carries the same theme as the previous two: a woman damaged by a previous relationship learns to trust a man again while dealing with some kind of personal or supernatural threat. The supernatural aspect of this story was more interesting than just your average ghost story with the author borrowing heavily from the historic, real-life Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire to establish the events leading to the haunting of an old New York building. She was able to create a fair amount of tension as our heroes, Maddie and Phil grappled with the long dead evil factory owner.

With regard to the writing, it has been my experience that each author has a rhythm to their writing. The rhythm in Shadow was awkward, stop and start. There were short bursts of dialog broken up with long passages of Maddie's internal musings. Sometimes she would start a sentence and then we'd be treated to 2 or 3 paragraphs of mental gymnastics before the sentence was completed. This tendency of the author to tell rather than show interrupted the flow of my reading and left me feeling frustrated in what would have been a better than average romantic ghost story. I'd give this one just three stars.

I loved the back of Shawn and Layla, who we meet in Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse book, All Together Dead. We meet this charming pair in the doomed Rhodes, IL hotel, The Hotel Giza, as the professional dance couple at the ball - the night before the blasts that destroy the full to capacity hotel - full with patrons of the vampire summit (which poor Sookie gets roped into against her will, though well paid for the risk).

This was a great back story, though I don't recall enjoying the other two stories quite as much.

I very much enjoyed the stories by Charlaine Harris - Dancers in the Dark and Barbara Hambly - Someone Elses Shadow. I love both of their books. Maggie Shayne was new to me. I liked her story also. Dancers in the Dark has vampires, the other two have malevolent spirits.

Of course I bought this because of Charlaine Harris' name and the fact that I like all of her books (not just the true blood series). The other writers of stories in this book made me aware that there were other good writers of the genre. I usually avoid series writers because I am of the opinion that the writers become hackneyed and lazy in their plotting. The into to new writers was pleasant and surprising. A good read, if not very deep.

Three novellas, the third by Charlaine Harris, with vampire characters. If you like Harris, and I do, this is good. Most of the characters are well-drawn, and there is a neat twist. The 2d novella is absorbing as well.

There was some problem with the mailing of this book and the seller handled it well. I recommend this seller for good customer service.

This could be Charlaine Harris' first actual GOOD short story! You know how her stories are in anthologies, usually the worst in the whole book. Well this time, she pulled it off beautifully!
The last story in the book pulled the whole thing down though. Not a good story, not great writing. Needs work.
