Rebecca Grainger would have done anything to stop her best friend from making a huge mistake by marrying Damon Asteriades. In fact she did do anything, even going so far as to try to seduce him the night before his wedding. However when her attempt fails, she leaves town never planning to come back.

A few years later she's a widow, her best friend is dead, and Damon's mother begs Rebecca to come back and pick up her wedding planning clipboard again. Rebecca reluctantly returns, but only after she sees no way out. After all, she has no desire to be that close to Damon again, especially considering the three year old secret she's keeping. Love though, will always find a way when it wants to....

Who would have thought Tessa Radley could pack so much emotion into such a short book as Black Widow Bride? She succeeds quite well and I could not put the book down once I started it. Good thing I had selected it for my poolside read one weekend where there was nothing to disturb me. I didn't have to feel guilty about brushing everything off to see what twist Tessa would throw in next.

There is a surprising amount of depth to Rebecca and Damon (even if Damon was a little too alpha for a beta lover like me) considering the limited word count of the Silhouette Desire line. By the end of the story we can completely understand what drove Rebecca to the desperate act of trying to seduce Damon that night. Then the added factor of The Big Secret makes Rebecca an even more sympathetic character.

I knew what the big secret was immediately but Tessa is so skilled at dropping red herrings that I found myself doubting my first thoughts many times. For me the excitement was more about the journey to the revelation of the secret than the actual secret itself. I love Tessa's style and if I hadn't known better, I never would have imagined this was her very first book. I am happy to say I enjoyed Black Widow Bride so much that I had to rush out and buy her next book, Rich Man's Revenge, as soon as it became available.

While it is a good story I did have a slight problem with the end. Why after all that make the boy his? So that the Heroine child is now his instead of her brothers. I thought TJ belonging to her brother and BF was the best way to end it. Why add the extra twist? That is what he would have deserved? She then has to live with the fact the firstborn is his and her BF's a reminder of what happened. Versus leaving it as his reminder of his mistake but also a clean break. If this all makes sense. I just betrayed at the end with that twist. I won't even mention her just giving up the kid and why the heck did the GM have to let them do that. That was out of the blue.

Black Widow Bride by Tessa Radley
Silhouette Desire # 1794 - April 2007

Fearing for his mother's health, Damon Asteriades must convince the one woman he despises above all others, Rebecca Grainger to return to Auckland and plan his brother's society wedding. Years before Rebecca had planned Damon's wedding to her best friend, and on the eve of the wedding she had tried to seduce him, and then she'd encouraged his new bride to leave him. Damon was certain that Rebecca was a gold digger, a black widow; having lead her much older husband to commit suicide after she ruined him financially. Meeting her again only renews his disdain not only for her but also in himself for the fiery attraction that still exists between them. Rebecca is flattered that Damon's mother remembers her so fondly but the last thing she wants is to put herself and her young son anywhere near the man who had so brutally rejected her. She can't deny that their attraction still exists and Rebecca fears that she'll fall for Damon all over again. Yet her generous heart can't ignore Damon's ill mother, or the worry he feels for her.

This is Ms Radley's debut and I'm really surprised I haven't read this one earlier. I loved the emotional intensity of this story. Damon is a strong character and is brutal at times with Rebecca, though he feels he's justified. He battles with himself; finding that all of the things he'd once believed of Rebecca may be false and this makes him very uncomfortable. Rebecca is a tremendously strong character, and with all her losses she's not self-pitying or whiney. Her only weakness is Damon. I like that we get insights to both these characters slowly, just as they too are discovering each other. Particularly well done is Damon's own realization of just how wrong he's been and how this forces him to reevaluate all that he is as a man. There are quite a few twists and turns in this story and we find conclusions we as readers have made are false, just as Damon and Rebecca too are learning their conclusions have been false. Ms. Radley has a fresh pleasing voice. This is an intense love story that will take you on a sizzling roller-coaster ride!

This is a reunion romance between the hero Damon and Rebecca. Four years ago they met and were attracted but Damon turned away, using her reputation as a Black Widow as his excuse. Instead he married her best friend, the meek Felicity known as Fliss.

When Fliss left him only 6 weeks later, he blamed Rebecca, feeding his hatred of her.

This is a well drawn tale of what happens when they are forced to meet again by his mother. Finally learning the truth about Rebecca's past and character, he cannot resist the explosive attraction.

I really enjoyed the interactions between not just Damon and Rebecca but his family and also Rebecca's son T.J. There are plenty of secrets to be uncovered before a happy ending can be grasped.

A good read.
