Listen to unlimited audiobooks on the web, iPad, iPhone and Android. I picked this up at a used bookstore along with several others, and am recommending it to friends for a good read. I think I enjoy the suspense more than the romance (romance gets a little dry with most books) but she keeps me wanting to see what happens between the characters every time. conkie 1Go to conkie 1's profile. This is an entertaining story, despite being a bit far-fetched or too-tidy at times. The plot did make me wonder how the book would end (always a good thing).

Written by Karen Robards, Audiobook narrated by Joyce Bean. If driving a piece-of-crap tow truck through the seediest part of town with a Smith & Wesson beside her means putting a roof over her son’s head, then Samantha Jones is going to be the best damn repo woman on the books. The streetwalkers, the drug pushers, the bands of looking-for-trouble punks haunting the mean streets at midnight don’t intimidate her.

Joyce Bean's narration props up a porous plot. Her work is exceptional in the courtroom scenes as she conveys the action and the emotional states of each participant. Further, her characterizations of Tom, Kate, and her school-age son are on target. Trade Ed., Brilliance Audio, 2008.

One cold November night when Kat Kominski was fifteen years old, she and some friends held up a convenience store. In the heat of the moment, one of the others shot and killed an off-duty cop moonlighting as a security guard. Kat and her pals fled the scene in a panic, and no one was caught.

Thirteen years later, Kat—now Kate White—has built a new life for herself. Now a single mom with a nine-year-old son, she works as a prosecutor in the Philadelphia DA’s office. But her dark past returns to haunt her when she walks into court one day and has a devastating encounter with a prisoner, Mario Castellanos, one of her companions from that terrible night.

Hardcore criminal Mario is facing a possible sentence of twenty years. He lets Kate know that he is counting on her, his old friend turned prosecutor, to make sure he goes free instead. If Kate doesn’t do what he wants, he’ll claim she was the one who killed the off-duty cop.

Kate is in a bind: If the truth about her past gets out, she stands to lose everything, including her son. But she can’t do what Mario wants, either. As Mario ups his demands, blackmailing and terrorizing her, she is forced to turn for protection to a sexy homicide detective, Tom Braga, who suspects her of…something. The two clash repeatedly as Tom keeps digging into her past, trying to learn the truth.

*This romantic suspense by bestselling author Karen Robard was excellent to say the least. It's a must read!............After hearing about a shooting at the courthouse and receiving one of the many sos signals that he taught his brother, homicide detective Tom Braga didn't waste one second getting over there. Was his brother Charlie who was a deputy Sheriff ok? Just graduating from law school and recently passing the bar exam, prosecutor Kate White was looking forward to her first trial but when gunshots are heard and being fired in courtroom207,the very courtroom her case was being tried in, Kate did the only thing she could possibly do by hiding under the table. She couldn't believe this was happening again as she thought of her past and how she tried with a determination to change her life including her name, go to law school, raise her son and live in harmony for the rest of her life. As Kate was pulled out from underneath the table by the last shooter standing, she is confronted by a very handsome detective as she is pulled from the courtroom. Tom thought Kate White was drop-dead gorgeous between that blonde hair and gorgeous blue eyes but Tom was conflicted with the look on her face something he would never forget anytime soon. As shots rang out , Tom called hoping Kate would pick up the phone and when she did, she not only told him she was fine but she had also shot the shooter. What? Tom knew something was wrong and he had a strong suspicion that Kate White was hiding what really happened back there by the cells. But what? As Tom continued to investigate Kate, he coudn't focus because of his overwhelming attraction for her and he knew without a doubt she felt the same way about him. As much as she tried, Kate couldn't help but think about Tom Braga but even if she did want something to happen between the two of them, she couldn't allow it or could she? When Kate is constantly threatened by unknown forces, she repeatedly lies to Tom terrified of her own past creeping back into her life once again and decides that maybe the best course of action, is to run away with her son Ben. Tom hadn't a clue what was going on but he was certain of two things, first being that he has fallen hard for Kate White and secondly, she is guilty as sin about something and he won't quit until he discovers what that something is even if it means taking his last breath in order to do it!........thank you♡♡

Kitty Kat who becomes Kate should have been named Scaredy Kat. From the very start of this book through the end, Kate is frightened and the more frightened she becomes the less common sense she seems to show.

In a regular romance book (not romantic suspense) this character would probably make a good heroine. When not frightened she seems to be able to pursue her goals, be a great mother, and keep her life on track. Unfortunately we see very little of that Kate in this book and the hero of the book sees even less. I have absolutely no idea why he would like her. The author says that he thinks she's brave, yet there is absolutely no reason for him to think so. The woman in this book freezes when she should act, and acts stupidly whenever she is frightened. Every time a new crisis occurs I got to imagining the worst way she could behave and that's what she did almost in all cases.

This is shown in even worse light when every other person in the book, including her 9 year old son can think better under pressure than she. The boy says at one point to the hero that it is a relief to have another man help take care of her, and unfortunately he's speaking the truth.

Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Kate White prosecutes her first case in court when embarrassingly her cellphone chimes. Judge Michael Moran "the moron" tells her to shut it now; Kate worries her young son Ben needs her when the shots are fired by the defendant "Little" Julie Soto. Moran is dead with his head blown off and two other prisoners join in the melee. Soto abducts Kate to allegedly use as a hostage while escaping.

Kate manages to escape while believing she killed Soto in doing so. However, she is not free as someone stalks her and Ben even breaking into their home. Philadelphia Police Detective Tom Braga leads the official investigation into the courtroom murder and its aftermath. He thinks Kate's escape was planned by her captors and that Soto lives. As he tries to keep the single mom and her son safe, Tom begins to connect the dots leading back to when 1994 Baltimore when fifteen years old Katrina Kominski was part of the foster care system.

This exciting urban thriller works because the audience believes that fully developed Kate and Ben are in deep trouble, and that Tom feels a deep need to protect them from Soto and who knows who else. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Kate's cellphone rings a Pussycat Dolls tune and never slows down until the final biting confrontation. Karen Robards provides a strong entertaining romantic suspense.
