Ursula Hegi has always been an insightful, thoughtful, respected author. With THE VISION OF EMMA BLAU, her reputation as oneof the finest contemporary fiction writers is sealed. The book travels from Germany to America and covers nearly 100 years. Emma, his granddaughter, is the girl of his dream; his sprawling apartment house, the place of his dream. Wasserburg, Stefan's estate, falls into a slow fade and parallels the evolution of American society.

Ursula Hegi's three generation family saga starts brilliantly and ends well, but in the middle, it becomes . Combined with Ursula Hegi's terrific writing and insights, this made for a great read.

Ursula Hegi's three generation family saga starts brilliantly and ends well, but in the middle, it becomes cumbersome and tiring. In movie trilogies, the second episode often seems like it is only there to connect the first and the third. The Vision of Emma Blau is a spinoff of Stones from the River, detailing the parallel story that starts with Stephen Blau running away from Bergdorf to find his way in America. He finally settles in New Hampshire and the story follows his family for several generations.

Her grandfather, Stefan Blau, was only thirteen when he ran away from his hometown in Germany one rainy November night in 1894. Convinced he lived in the most fascinating time possible-an age of transformation and discovery-he’d felt restless in Burgdorf.

This book was not my cup of tea. I liked the general idea of the book, but some of the sexual themes of the book caught me off guard and made me uncomfortable. I also thought that a good portion of it really drug on and I was anxious for them to just move along. I only got it because my book club was reading it. I didn't even finish it.

Spanning over ninety years and four generations, The Vision of Emma Blau explores the frailties and strength of the human condition. With musical pose, in-depth character development and multi-threaded plot lines, Hegi manages to deliver a clear story of unrequited love, hunger for success, and desire for acceptance. The life of each character is detailed in a manner that connects the reader to their circumstances and makes one question the true cost of adoration from afar and the price one pays for wanting those things that they can never really have. It is true that anything one is willing to have at any cost, one will acquire at all cost; and why pay more than necessary for anything.

Engaging story filled with in depth insight as to the long term affects of trauma and childhood interpretations of the trauma event

An engaging page turner that leaves you richer for having known the very human characters who are unable to openly express themselves and their conflicts

Ursula Hegi knows how to write. I have read all of her books. Stones by the river is of course her classic, but all of her books are worth not only reading because she really goes deep into her characters, but they are keepers for the book shelf.
Rollers from Abdun Rollers from Abdun
Like all her books, a look into the persons of all the characters.

It is not inconceivable that you can read Ursula Hegy and leave this book out. I didn't like the ending, and didn't see it coming. Quite sad to read actually.
