Joyce Cary was born in 1888 into an old Anglo-Irish family and educated at Clifton. Cary is probably best known as a novelist and especially for Mister Johnson and ‘The First Tryptych’ (Herself Surprised, To Be a Pilgrim and The Horse’s Mouth) in which the three main protagonists narrate their interlocking experiences and reveal their contrasting personalities. However he was also a fine short story writer, essayist and poet.

Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary (7 December 1888 – 29 March 1957) was an Anglo-Irish novelist. Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary was born in a hospital in Derry, County Londonderry in the north of Ireland in 1888. His family had been 'Planter' landlords in neighbouring Inishowen, a peninsula on the north coast of County Donegal, also in Ulster, since the early years of the Plantation of Ulster in the early seventeenth-century.
