Phyllis Ayame Whitney (September 9, 1903 – February 8, 2008) was a Japanese-born American mystery writer. Rare for her genre, she wrote mysteries for both the juvenile and the adult markets, many of which feature exotic locations. She preferred to say she wrote "romantic novels of suspense".

Hawaiian-born Caroline Kirby was only six years old when her parents died under mysterious circumstances, and she was shuttled off to live with her grandmother in San Francisco.

Caroline Kirby, raised by her grandmother in San Francisco, returns after an aimless life and a divorce, to her childhood home in Hawaii, seeking the truth about her father's death. Phyllis A. Whitney moved around quite a bit during her youth, from Japan to China, the Philippines, and the United States. Her first novel, for adolescents, was A Place for Ann (1942). Phyllis writes wonderful well plotted mysteries. The locations for this story are real and become a big part of the story. History of the islands is woven with local flora, and geography. The characters are real and move the story realistically.

A fantastic book that expresses Hawaii and the Hawaiians as I knew them in the early 1970's.

The book is well written, kept me turning pages well into the night and best of all kept me guessing until the final reveal.

After starting to read, I realized that I had read this book before. (I gave away most of my books when downsizing to a condo.) But I read it all the way through anyhow, and it was good -- even for a second time around.

Too many typos! Very distracting. Definitely should have had a better editor or proofreader to catch the numerous mistakes before publishing.
Bil Bil
Pure Whitney storytelling at its best

Very good story about the Silversword and Maui!

Story was slow and predictable.
She got a little carried away with descriptions.
