Australian lovers of historical fiction will be thrilled to discover a novel exploring a little-known aspect of our own history - why is it that Australian cinema never managed to achieve independence despite so many creative pioneers?

Perhaps no other historical novelist has investigated the history of Australian cinema, so Belinda Alexandra's story has fresh material and scenery for historical fiction fans. Alexandra's impeccably researched story takes the reader from Prague to Sydney, Australia as two young sisters struggle to establish a safe haven after the mysterious death of their mother.

The gently twisting love story is a backdrop to a story about one young woman's ambition and creativity as Alexandra brings the challenges of the early Australian film industry to life through her fictional characters. She lovingly recreates Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the southern parts of New South Wales with careful historical detail.

My only criticism of this book is that there were too many male secondary characters, so I struggled to keep them straight. It is a beautifully stylised book, rather than plot driven. If you prefer a fast-paced book, you would probably need a deep interest in cinema and Australian history to stay engaged. I loved the style and the characterisation, so I will be reading it again and again.

Her knowledge of recent world history is unparalleled and she writes very well. I like the way she manages to weave a bit of Australia and Australian history into her novels, no matter how far away the story actually starts. Fascist Italy, post-revolution Russia, Catalonia during Spanish civil war, China during the war with Japan, somehow, they all end up here and she writes so well you are just swept up in the story.

I loved this book. It was much more than I expected it to be. Set in Australia, mainly, was a lovely twist as I recognised nearly all the places mentioned. It was full of intrigue, love, passion, trust and honour. I was reading it at home while sick and couldn't put it down, so it must have been good!
When considering this item you should consider that it is very Australian, with a little European at the beginning. The characters are all lovable, and of course there is the villian.
This work has made me think about conservation and wildlife in general, although it wasn't annoyingly pushing an agenda.

Good Belinda Alexander, taking you on a journey from Prague to Australia and always with a slight twist and some romance!

Always like reading Belinda Alexandria books, she puts a great deal of authenticity into them.
Always enjoy Belinda Alexandra's books. Another story where good people triumph over adversity. Sadly evil and greed wreaked havoc before a peaceful ending.
