Mary Austin, née Mary Hunter, was an American novelist and essayist who wrote about Native American culture and social problems. Mary Austin's most enduring legacy is to be found in her works on the American Southwest, best represented by her first published book, The Land of Little Rain, an extended essay that originally appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. Mount Mary Austin, in the Sierra Nevada, was named in her honor. In 1932, she published her autobiography, Earth Horizon, a retelling of her life in the third person.
