Like all Powers' books, this is so funny, it's easy to forget how well-written it i. I still have my original paperback copy and try to read it at least once a year. Anyone who grew up attending Catholic schools will find it hilarious and nostalgic.

Like all Powers' books, this is so funny, it's easy to forget how well-written it is. Wonderful stuff I'll return to again and again. By the way, what ever happened to "The Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice Cream God"? I loved that one, too, and it's not on the list of Powers' books. Someone out there is missing out! 0. Report. I read this book about 35 years ago and laughed myself off the couch. I decided to re-read it again. It helps if you attended a Catholic High School but the experiences we all share during those years will relate to all of us who have attended high school during those formative years.

The first book by Mr. Powers was called "The Last Catholic in America" and that too was extremely entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud and my husband, while sitting in the same room with me, would start to laugh at my laughing. He had no idea what I was reading. He just knew I was really, really enjoying my book.

Patent Leather Shoes is a lightheared look into the teen years when we are investigating the opposite sex, religion, pals we think we'll be with throughout our life, the places in our neighborhood that played an important part in our life experience and family as seen through impressionable eyes. The neighborhood he writes about just happens to be fairly close to the one I grew up in on the South Side of Chicago. I've even been to the skating rink and the movie show he talks about. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane and wouldn't have mattered if I knew those exact places or not, we all have those memories no matter what city they are located in.

You don't have to be Catholic to enjoy these books, you only have to have been a teenager ebbing into adulthood while passing through the doors of your local high school.

I was so excited to find this book! I read it in High School and several time afterwards. Each time I've laughed out loud and got teary-eyed. It is a hysterical yet poignant look at Middle and High School days. it's actually part of a trilogy that takes you from Elementary School (The Last Catholic In America) to Middle School/High School (Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up) to College (The Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice Cream God). The first two are truly my favorites. They are fictionalized memoirs that really hit home and the stories in each chapter relate to snippets of my life! A MUST READ!

I was raised Catholic and never really heard of this but it all makes sense that the priest and nuns would find any reason that possibly could promote a sexual thoughts. We had to wear loafers. Case closed to patent leather shoes by making loafers a part of the uniform.

I first read this around 1975 (ish). I remember sitting at my desk at work, reading at lunchtime, and laughing so loudly co-workers would stop by! A very accurate portrayal.
