But the investigation into the well-known surgeon's death is raising too many questions and providing too few answers for homicide detective Lieutenant Peter Decker.

And what linked a celebrated doctor with strict fundamentalist beliefs to a gang of outlaw bikers? But the most unsettling connection of all is the one that ties the tormented Sparks family to Peter Decker's own -- and the secrets shared by a renegade Catholic priest...and Decker's wife, Rina Lazarus.

I am reading the entire Decker/Lazarus series after a dear friend bought me Book 1 as a gift and this is one of the best. I enjoyed the family dynamics, though other reviewers did not, and I found the various religious references fascinating (Fundamentalist Christianity, Catholicism, Orthodox Judiasm). I even found the homophobia to be, sadly, realistic and an important part of the story. As usual, the character development was wonderful even though there were many family members involved and five detectives on the case. Just great writing!

These books just keep getting better and better and I've already bought the next one in the series for my Kindle.

I'm a huge Faye Kellerman fan, so, as the saying goes even a bad day in paradise is a good day. This isn't my favorite of the Decker/Lazarus series, but it has some intriguing plot twists and turns, though you'll probably guess most of the ending. Unlike some other reviewers, I like the slower pace of some sections of the novel, the various family issues and the religious aspects (in this case ranging from Orthodox Jewish to Catholic to Fundamentalist Christian). The novel also touches on unconventional sexuality issues.

I've written more than a dozen books, all non-fiction on travel and retirement subjects (see Lan Sluder's author's page on Amazon for a sampling). Reading Kellerman always makes me realize how difficult it must be to do a good mystery novel, what a good writer she is and what a lousy novelist I would be.

Another great book from the author with the protagonists Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus. This story was nice and simple which made it a very smooth read. One of the main reasons I really like this series is that it is one of the few series and books that involved old style police investigations, interviews and interrogations where the detectives actually solve the crime.

I was not ready for a novel that I could identify with at so many levels. As a practicing physician (Ob/ Gyne) of more than 30 years, married with a young family, now grown, I can vouch for the stresses, conflicts, and emotional turmoil of a medical home life that Ms.Kellerman captured so sensitively and unerringly even though fortunately my life did not mirror the dramatic events that destroyed the Sparks' family. Once again Ms. K. hit the mark with a novel that is believable and credible.

This is story-telling at it's finest: the events have a familiar ring to it, but the characters are surprising, and their motivation even more so. The relationship between Rina and Decker takes a turn you don't see coming and wouldn't have believed if you had learned too early what you learn now. (And if that isn't a teaser, I don't know what is. Deal with it. Better yet, go read the book.)

I won't give it away...you have to find out for yourself why this is worth the five stars I gave it.

Faye Kellerman has long been a favourite of mine and this novel just confirms that. It's great to know before even starting that your are going to be treated to an excellent plot, with twists and turns that will keep you guessing and reading late into the night. Lots of surprises in this one, just when you think you have everyone figured out! You know with authors, such as Kellerman, that your guaranteed to get your money's worth because she consistantly delivers every time!

I have been reading Faye Kellerman's Decker/Lazarus mysteries for years & somehow I missed Prayers For The Dead. For me, this is the best from the best. It was full of twists & turns & the final chapters were full of emotion. Very well done!
This is one of many Faye Kellerman books about this couple, Peter and Rena. Its best to start with book #1 but any single book in the series will stand on its own. There is something for everyone in the Decker/Lazarus series. I have read about 40% of the series, and love them. Kudos for Faye Kellerman.
