For Michael and Terry Paling. 1. The call came in to the Sweetwater detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police about five minutes after Sergeant Abraham Wilkie and Constable Brendan Copps had arrived to begin the day shift. The duty officer listened for a few moments, then swiveled around in his chair to catch Wilkie’s eye and repeated for the sergeant’s benefit what he was hearing: Homicide, you think. Who is this we should have nailed?

I've always enjoyed Eric Wright's books, right from the beginning. And while Death of a Sunday Writer is worlds away from his Charlie Salter series, it is an engaging departure. It does resemble, in its initial premise, P. D. James's An Unsuitable Job For a Woman in that it has a female "inheriting" a detective agency. But that is the only resemblance.

Fans of Eric Wright's Charlie Salter series will quickly warm to his new detective, Mel Pickett, a Toronto homicide cop just retired to the rustic town of Larch River. Eric Wright introduced Mel Pickett in Buried In Stone. It's a plain place for a plain man and his life consists of simple pleasures: his hand-built log cabin, carpentry work for the community theater, and cautious courtship of café proprietor Charlotte Mercer. In his newest adventure, the retired officer from Toronto becomes involved in police work when a body is discovered in the cabin he owns.
