This book was very true to any black woman who grew up middle class during the era that this book covers. In fact, I'm 26 but I shared this with my mother, 65, and she actually loved it (which I was very surprised about). If you're looking for raunchy sex scenes or amazing, hard to believe love stories, then this isn't your book. This is more along the lines of Push (Precious) because of how real the content was. She struggles with a lot from start to finish and this is the first time, since reading "Gone with the Wind" that I've ever read through a characters entire life from childhood into adulthood. And by the end she really gets her act together. It's inspiration for black women and, if you're not a squimish parent, I'd give it to my college-aged daughter.

This is one of Connie Briscoe's best books. It's a classic because it takes one through the journey of real friends as we peer into their childhoods, the inner circle of their families, and see them grow up. After reading this one feels that the characters are real. In the past I took the audiobook out the library and my daughters and niece I would love listening to it on long vacation drives to the shore and they'd fight over who would read the hard copy on the beach. So, this was a replacement copy of that book.

Ironically, I am writing this review after just having finished another Connie Briscoe book, PG County. Though PG County was fun to read, it will not stay with me like Big Girls Don't Cry has. I read "Big Girls" several times because I loved it so much. I have passed it on to several friends to read also. I won't do that with PG County. Read Big Girls Don't Cry, you won' regret it! I still think it is the better Briscoe! :)
