William read, smoking a large cigar. Morgan left the room, went down the hall, and quietly opened the door of the library. Seth was sitting in a large leather chair behind a massive, carved walnut desk.

William read, smoking a large cigar. The three sisters asked Morgan if she’d like to help embroider Austine’s linens for her trousseau. Eleanor’s wedding dress is a light blue silk and Austine’s is a pink satin, Jennifer chattered. He was smoking a large cigar and seemed totally engrossed in an enormous book.

The heroine of this book could not be more pathetic and the man could not be much more chauvinistic. I realize that these are common themes in romance novels but this book takes it to the extreme. Even stating towards the end of the book that the heroine could not survive without someone telling her what to do. Despite these major character flaws, the book still isn't all that gripping. It seems to go from one tragedy to another, rarely is there a happy moment or really even any spectacular dialogue. I've read several of Deveraux's other romance novels and this has probably got to be one of the worst.

I have read this book 10+ times over 25 romantic and full of twists..good read..I would recommend you all read it soon
I would also say - most people who read this - have to remember the era it is written about and not compare to modern times. Understand the culture - this was a very exciting fun read. I am not expecting a biography of a woman but rather a historical romance. I also want to say - have you asked people around you - love is blind and fraught with love/hate, happy/angry...this book shows what happens if you let your emotions drive your actions. Many people in this day and age do not even know what a happy family looks like so this is actually pretty true of a lot of people you should know better but take foolish actions that cause the valleys and peaks of life!!

The story is well written but not much of a story line. The damsel in distress gets old. You would think she would get a clue after the first incident. Wow, the male lead was a jerk. He should have had to do a lot more to prove he was different. I don't think she would have trusted so easily.

That aside, it was an easy read and with some very enjoyable parts.

Jude Deveraux is the thinking woman's romance novelist. Her characters are thoughtful, intelligent women who use their ingenuity and imagination to create and improvise what they need in each situation presented. Strong-willed, logically deducing and independent, yet still innately feminine. Not flopping, hopelessly helpless characters, but believable characters who solve through their trials and tribulations, bravely and determined to be better for the work given.

I could not get over the bipolar relationship the two characters had through out the book. "I love you, no wait I hate you, no wait I love you again," crap. It confused the hell out of me. Very juvenile and exhausting. Everything was so quick to change too. Morgan: "This is a business agreement, so don't touch me, but why won't you look at me like I want you to?" OMG! ---- Seth: "You're a whore that teases men on a daily basis, I want none of it from you, but I hope you miss me while I'm gone." Wtf?!?! There were several times I wanted to bang my head against the wall, or throw the book across the room for just continuing to read it.
Don't get me wrong, I love Jude Devereaux, and that's pretty much why I read this book...hoping that things would change, but I have definitely read better from her. This seemed like a hurried book that just needed to get on its way out the door so she could start another one. I would only recommend this book if you have a goal to read every book she has written.....that's all.

I am giving it 4 stars because any book that grabs a reader, even if it is annoying, is a well written book. It is not one of Jude's best, but it is an early book. She definitely improves as an author!
I am almost done with this book (I put it away and started another but had to go back). I think that says it all. It is a book you cannot walk away from without finishing - In spite of the fact that you want to SCREAM through-out the story! Seth is an IDIOT and I must say Morgan is too. One thing about this story that is unbelievable is that Seth could love Morgan as much as he says he does and then completely disbelieve her just because a man HE HATES claims she cheated. And then everything Morgan is subjected to because Seth does not believe her and she still takes him back. I am assuming she will, they always do. Even though it seems unbelievable, the characters seem real (not their actions maybe). They are well written in that you feel their anger, happiness, etc. It is kind of like a movie with a bad script but your favorite actors are in it and you want to watch them. I must go and finish this because I can't seem to walk away!

I have been reading Ms. Deveraux for decades. This was better than most romances of the time it was originally written and published. I am happy to say that she has improved over the years. The characters in this particular story are caricatures of stereotypical romance novels, quick to assume the worst of one another and even quicker to hop into bed together. The story lines were convoluted and implausible.
I believe this was Jude's first book. If you like background for her other stories and main family characters, you'll find it here.
