"Why are you pretending you don't know me?"

FINAL DECISION: This book has a good storyline and premise but the romance felt flat and incomplete because it was resolved too quickly and without any real emotion.

THE STORY: Velvet Dale is a model who comes to Florida to do a shoot. She is a widow with a young son. There she meets Jerard Daniels, a businessman, who is a widower with a daughter of his own. Jerard confronts Velvet with the fact that the two were lovers several years ago. Velvet does not remember Jerard because she suffered selective amnesia after the death of her husband. Now Jerard is telling Velvet that they were lovers and that she was unfaithful to her perfect fiance. And he doesn't believe that she actually has amnesia.

OPINION: This book disappointed me because the story was progressing so well until the ending. I was engaged with the story, but the resolution came so quickly and without any real movement in the characters that it felt forced and unnatural. I realized that the problem was that there was no real depth to these characters. The best part of this book was the plot itself but the characters remained distant and unknowable. Because Velvet has amnesia, her true motivations are forever left unknown. Without the drama and emotion, this book left me feeling empty.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book was originally published in the 1980s as a category romance.

CONNECTED BOOKS: FORGOTTEN LOVER is a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 2 stars.

This starts off with Velvet doing a fashion shoot. But when she runs into someone who seems to know her, who goes into a tailspin. She had been in an accident and ended up with amnesia. Could He be able to open up her memories? What does he have to do with her forgotten days? Was everything in her marriage as good as she remembers?

Very good amnesia romance from Carole Mortimer. ALMOST as good as Lost Love.

It was OK. Too much unnecessary angst though.

I read this book years ago and wasn't sure if I wanted to read it again, but after I did I was glad. This is a keeper. The characters have good chemistry and I thought the story was believable.

I read this book like over 20 years ago and it's still a story that comes back to my mind even though I don't have the book anymore. Velvet is a model and staying at a hotel while doing a photo-shoot. Jerard tries to talk to her and she thinks he mistakes her for someone else. She doesn't remember their affair from 2 years ago because she's lost her memory.

*spoiler alert*
At first Jerard is convinced that she "chooses" not to remember - that the affair didn't have the same impact on her that it had on him. The author does a great job in showing the emotional impact of living with someone who is no longer emotionally there. Jerard's wife at the time he meets Velvet is no longer his wife physically or emotionally.

Velvet was in a private plane that crashed when she lost her memory and also lost her husband so she's sure she couldn't have had an affair. Jerard has a little girl from his previous marriage and Velvet has a little boy. Jerard convinces Velvet that they can help each other by getting married. Velvet doesn't understand why she responds physically to Jerard everytime he touches her and it confuses her. But because of this, she feels maybe she knew him more that she thinks. She finally agrees to marry him.

I loved Velvet's brother, Simon. There's a scene where he tells her that he's just a simple guy. She retorts that he's "simple Simon" and he retaliates by picking her up and throwing her over his shoulder while she screams good-naturedly... and then Jerard comes upon them - very cute.

This was a deep, emotional, humerous, and highly romantic story. I liked both the H/h - Jerard is frustrated and angry that Velvet doesn't remember what they had. Velvet is emotional and confused about her reactions to Jerard. For those of you who don't like stories where people cheat on the spouses, it really wasn't that way. Jerard's wife is literally not there for him anymore and Velvet's husband has a very interesting explanation that all comes back to Jerard and a surprise for the end.

When Jerard realizes without a doubt that she really lost her memory he is so sweet. There's a sweet little surprise at the end but once you read certain parts, you'll figure it out before you get there. If you can get a hold of this book, do so.

Oldie but goodie! One of the best love story Ms Mortimer wrote. I wished they have these books on kindle so I can read it over again.
From Back Cover - Velvent balked at the thought, it frightened her. Jerard Daniels frightened her! He claimed to have known her - intimitately - two years earlier, but her mind was a blank. Her husband's tragic death on the day their son was born had triggered Velvet's amnesia - she remembered nothing. Yet why would this man lie? Velvet just couldn't believe she'd had an affair with a married man while engaged to Anthony. On the other hand, if she had love Jared as much then as she did now...
