River of Dreams book. This was a real snoozefest. I tend to enjoy slow meandering books, but River of Dreams was a long, tedious, and uneventful read.

River of Dreams is an interesting book to read. The descriptions of Brazil in the late 1800's is informative and worth knowing. The characters are appealing and fairly well developed. The editing is TERRIBLE!. The book is filled with misspelled words and incorrect grammar. The biggest problem with the editing is the number of extra punctuation marks scattered throughout the book. Why would a colon be stuck in the middle of a sentence? The incorrect punctuation was distracting and annoying. For this reason alone, I wouldn't recommend that anyone purchase this book.

I am in such a quandary about this book. I have read the author's 3 other Midwife's books and loved the story and information therein. I would describe this book as a " geographical historical fiction". I had to keep reading the book because the author is such a great story teller, such a great writer.
Would I go to Brazil , ? nooooooo !!!!!!. Did I have a favorite character ??? Probably Margaret who had her own thoughts on life. She went through many hardships for a well to do lady, ie " being rich has it's own set of troubles".
Would I recommend this book? Yes, if you like to learn about Brazil and the bad climate but wonderful crops that flourish in humid almost uninhabitable weather. Yes, because the story was so well written. The storyline of characters were so real and compelling. Would I read this again? No. I didn't understand the Portuguese language and had to skip over some words. I have her other book "Flowers in the Blood". (Jews in India and the Orient ). I get the gist of the Jewish or Yiddish language better than Portuguese language, (somewhat like Spanish but not quite).
