One of the youngest Colonels in the Duke of Wellington’s Army, Ivar Harling returns from the victorious Battle of Waterloo to Harlington House in London’s Berkeley Square. The Duke is determined to find out how she has been so cruelly misled. And along the way he finds the love that he has always dreamt of finding - but not before the spectre of death steps into his path.

I do not suppose it was reported in the French papers, or wherever else you have been, but English ones have been full of little else. Do you realise that the men. Do you realise that the men who fought for the freedom of this country, and who were, according to the Duke of Wellington, the finest Army England has. Ever had, were dismissed without a pension, a medal, or even a thank-you? The Duke knew this, but it seemed more poignant now that it was being expressed bitterly in Alvina’s soft voice.

ppl should read Barbara's book. the characters in her storyline is as always great! As per my reviews of all her books, her book is a great stress reliever and also to bring you into the 18th century.

A little disappointing. I just read another of Barbara Cartland's books before this one and I feel the same way I did when I finished both--is that it? I don't know if this is her style but the story here is not altogether boring. A new Duke returns from the war and finds that his distant cousin has been selling his family treasures, which infuriates him, only to discover she was only trying to keep herself and her loyal servants from starving during the Duke's absence. This could have gone interesting and exciting in all kinds of ways! Instead, it was a tepid sort of romance, where there is nothing one minute and "my love you are mine forever!" the next, while you are left wondering how did you miss all the romance in between? All in all not a bad book but sort of a lukewarm romance that left me unsatisfied.
