and Lewin, . Ed. Modern and Ancient Fluvial Systems, International Association of Sedimentologists, Special Publication 6, Oxford, 169-180. One inherited characteristic in the alluvial reach downstream is that the avulsion channels diverged only slightly from the orientation of the upstream bedrock channel (range 2 ° - 38 °, mean and standard deviation 1. ° ± 1. °). A second inherited characteristic is that avulsion channels were initiated from short distances downstream after exiting the upstream bedrock channel reach (range 62

News from the International Association of Sedimentologists. Last June, Poppe de Boer visited the 8th International Siberian Early Career GeoScientists Conference in Novosibirsk and presented a lecture in the scope of the IAS Special Lecture Tour. The conference with many participants from Siberia, and from other parts of Russia, from Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, the Czech Republic, Poland, India, Iran, China, Nigeria, the UK and Norway, was a very well organized event.

International Association of Sedimentologists Special Publications. Collinson and J. Lewin 1983. 584 pages, 250 illus-trations. No. 7 Sedimentology of Coal and Coal-Bearing Sequences. 420 pages, 318 illus-trations. The emphasis of the book is on coal depositional environments and facies models, and the main topics covered are coal environ-ments, composition and geochemistry, facies models of associated clastic rocks, applications of facies models to coal mining, and sedimentary tectonics of coal basins. 4 Sedimentation in Oblique-Slip Mobile Zones.

The articles cover fundamental and applied studies of both modern and ancient rivers, are based on state-of-the-art technology, include complementary philosophical approaches, and span a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This book includes some of the most recent advances in the study of the morphodynamics and sedimentology of meandering rivers, and is an important resource for those who want to investigate fluvial systems and their deposits.
