Cultural atlas of Japan. This is an excellent general history ("for general readers and travelers''), authoritatively written and lavishly illustrated. Martin Collcutt is a professor of East Asian studies and history at Princeton University, where he teaches Japanese intellectual and cultural history. He also has a particular interest in the introduction and development of the monastic practice in Japanese Rinzai Zen. In the 1960s he studied and practiced Zen in Japan and met Morinaga Roshi at Daishuin in Kyoto. Subsequently he served as Roshi's interpreter on some of his visits to the United States and England.

I have a recently purchased a 1988 edition of the "Cultural Atlas of Japan". I lived outside Tokyo for a couple years in the early 60s and currently studying Nihongo (Japanese language). I wanted a book to refresh memories of what I had seen, and learn about what I had not. This book, with 53 maps and 336 illustrations (266 in color) along with rather detailed information on various cities and prefectures on the 5 main islands, is filling this requirement very well. It's 224 pages, excluding indices, glossary, and illustration listings do not make for a History book yet supply the basis of Japanese cultural history over 11,000 years up through the post war era. As stated, my copy was copyrighted in 1988. It does not include much of the high-tech era, but the cultural aspect has not changed that radically with the technological changes of recent time. I enjoyed the short but proportional descriptions of the main islands with Honshu, the largest island, getting a rather detailed explanation, while the smaller, less populated were not ignored. I am finding this an outstanding reference book on the cultural aspect of Japan. The reading is both informative and interesting.

This volume is handsome and visually appealing, but its contents are a disappointment. The appellation "atlas" is entirely inappropriate for a work that contains only a handful of maps scattered across hundreds of pages and pays almost zero attention to regional variations. The work also spoke little about "culture," choosing to zero in on specific historical anecdotes, generalizations about historic ties with China, and the most cursory information on the life of the modern Japanese. I was very, very disappointed. It's a nice book, but it's not at all what I expected.

I'm a Japanese and I had some troubles when I explain about Japanese things in English at my web. I got several dictionaries and encyclopedias on Japanese culture in English, but they won't do when I want to explain in depth.
This Cultural Atlas has detailed descriptions and full of beautiful photos and graphics. Interesting to read and joy to eyes.
If you are interested in Japanese culture or history, this book will be a good companion.
