The executable C++ code, now printed in color for easy reading, adopts an object-oriented style particularly suited to scientific applications. Co-authored by four leading scientists from academia and industry, Numerical Recipes starts with basic mathematics and computer science and proceeds to complete, working routines.

William Weston (1763 – 29 August 1833) was a civil engineer who worked in England and the United States of America. For a brief period at the end of the 18th century, Weston was the pre-eminent civil engineer in the new United States and worked on the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Navigation Company, the Western and Northern Inland Lock Navigation Companies in New York, the Middlesex canal in Massachusetts, the Schuylkill Permanent Bridge at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Potomac navigation.

A fast numerical algorithm for computing interval matrices containing solutions of continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations is proposed. This algorithm utilizes numerical spectral decomposition and involves only cubic complexity. Stabilizing and anti-stabilizing properties and uniqueness of the contained solution can moreover be verified by this algorithm.

We call this book Numerical Recipes for several reasons. In one sense, this book is indeed a cookbook on numerical computation. However, there is an im-portant distinction between a cookbook and a restaurant menu. The latter presents choices among complete dishes in each of which the individual avors are blended and disguised.
