I teach a course in Visual Sociology at the college level. Maybe my definition of visual sociology is different from my colleagues in the field, but does there really need to be such dry, complex, disinterested text information on a topic area that can bring so much to light about ourselves and other cultures? This book has its moments, but very few, in which some insights are given into looking at ourselves and others through photos. It seems to me that the spirit, the soul of the entire field is destroyed by academic "insight." It's like going to a great movie and have someone talk about the quality of the popcorn....they missed the whole point. It is no wonder that students hate research...all the "experts" have killed the wonder and the curiosity. This book is indeed guilty of intellectual murder!

This actually would make an *excellent* primer for students in professional schools without an art history program. But it is certainly worrisome (and perhaps disingenuous?) how often the author claims there are no existing terms for things like formal analysis (so she is forced to invent them) or other sources for approaches she presents. This is a slight reinvention of an existing wheel. And if you inserted the phrase "art historian" before the name of every scholar she cites who IS one, the real genesis of this book would be more authentically clear.

This is a great book. Describing more than 7 different methodologies to interprete and analyse visuals/images. It is fairly accessible. Not to much jargon is used although it keep the methodologies to a high standard. I really liked it.
