The text also employs the "rule of three" (a watchword among reform-minded calculus instructors): functions are represented (1) algebraically (or symbolically; . as an equation, like x y + 2 ); (2) numerically (. as tables of values); 2nd (3) graphically (. as graph lines or figures plotted on axes).

Thomas P. ISBN-13: 978-0534939366. I've taught Calculus from this textbook. The basic philosophy of the book is perfectly in synch with the changes to the AP exam, and thus it does a reasonable job of preparing students to take the AP. Some of the individual problems are wonderful.

Computer Mathematics Systems and Calculus Reform Material are topics of discussion in many Mathematics Departments. There are many questions about how to best use each of these in mathematics courses.

This text is a by-product of a joint US calculus reform project supported by grants from various organizations. It emphasizes process modelling and analysis, the unifying principles which tie together mathematics and related disciplines. With this workbook and accompanying software, users can solve single algebraic equations using the bisection method, secant method or Newton method. They can also solve systems of equations, find determinants, reduce matrices in their row echelon form, and invert matrices. By manipulating statistics material, users can use computer combinations, permutations, binomial and normal probabilities, and least-square curve fitting. An appendix in the workbook demonstrates how to use the software, and each section includes a tutorial example showing required steps. The text incorporates the use of technology in the study of calculus, thus allowing students to consider how calculus concepts apply to the real world. It also contains extensive computer-generated artwork and tables.
