Lucid explanation of manifold not available elsewhere. This book provides a solid foundation and the mathematical machinery for advanced theoretical physics.

This book is less bad than most of the do-it-all in one shot kind of books like Road to Reality or Joos Theoretical Physics, but still misses the mark like the other reviews I gave it. The strength is he uses real mathematics, however, of course the task he is trying to accomplish is too difficult given that the very foundations of quantum theory and relativity are in question, in the sense that there is no underlying structure that can create the bridge from the Standard Model to GR as we know it. So to be so ambitious as to cover all topics using mathematics in a small tome, is something achievable only by the very best in physics. Lawrie does not fall into this category, as he sails through all sorts of theoretical mathematics and physics very quickly, leaving many important details behind. I think you will find more confusion and questions rather than enlightenment, so I cannot recommend this book. The author compares this to a grand tour English students would make to big European cities, but I don't think this tour is very grand. It's full of holes and traps.
