I have been familiar with the work and writing of
Dr. Scott Lilienfeld. His commitment is to the necessity
of developing scientific practice in psychology
and allied professions. I have read a couple of his
books and articles and I have to say that this time
these guys outdid themselves. I have to take my
hat off at the work they have done to out line not
only the need to use science in psychology but to
formulate strategies on how to use science in our
clinical work. Amazing work, well done, this is the
work of professionals who have taken their time
to assure that the rest of us understand what
is needed and wanted to our clients and patients.
I am sure as science is that this work will be
Refined, but my first impression is that they could
not have done it any better this time. In fact
I can assert with high degree of confidence that if
the 78% of us (shame on us) that do not read
scientific articles in our field were to read this book
and take the counsel and practice their suggestion,
not only are we going to be a lot more respected by
the public (including respecting ourselves), but our
work will be substantially improved in effectiveness
and less harm will be done to our patients. My
prefer statement in the book is "Science is essential
to safeguard against human error". Hell of a good
job guys!!!

Great book! So many wonderful and helpful ideas relating to psychology written in compelling and digestible chapters! It's not a how-to book in that sense, but more designed to get you thinking about major trends or issues in the field.

Excellent in almost every way. You'd probably want to know a bit about Paul E Meehl before you buy this book. If his brand of psychology is attractive to you, then you'll love this book.

However, even if you're not a follower of Meehl there is still much here to commend. The authors' attempts to save psychology from the grip of fashion and pseudo-science are to be applauded.

I can think of no other book available today that presents the scientific underpinnings of the field of clinical psychology better than this one. Today's most respected scholars discuss the most relevant topics for clinicians in mental health, especially for psychologists. I will be assigning this text as required reading for my doctoral students so that they can learn to be scholars as well as practitioners, and practice not from the hip but from the comprehensive base of clinical science that exists to guide their work.
