The need for a practical book on psychophysics inevitably led to a second need: a comprehensive package of software for analyzing psychophysical data. The result was Palamedes. Although developed in conjunction with the book, Palamedes has since taken on a life of its own and is hence applicable to a much wider range of scenarios than are described in this book. Thus, although Psychophysics: A Practical Introduction is primarily directed at newcomers to psychophysics, it is intended to provide sufficient new material, either in the form of software or theory, to engage the seasoned practitioner.

Kingdom, Nicolaas Prins. Psychophysics is the primary scientific tool for understanding how the physical world of colors, sounds, odors, movements and shapes translates into the sensory world of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell - in other words, how matter translates into mind. This book is the first to combine into a single volume the principles underlying the science of psychophysical measurement and the practical tools necessary to analyze data from psychophysical experiments.

Psychophysics: A Practical Application is a single-volume text that covers the rudimentary principles of psychophysical methods and the practical tools that are important for processing data from psychophysical experiments and tests. It makes complicated concepts and procedures understandable for beginners and non-experts in psychophysics. The book includes a wide array of analytical techniques, such as novel classification schemes for psychophysics experiments; new software packages for collecting and processing psychophysical data; practical tips for designing psychophysical experiments; and the advantages and disadvantages of the different psychophysical methods. The first chapters of the book present the fundamental concepts and terminology of psychophysics, and they familiarize readers with available psychophysical techniques. The remaining chapters discuss a series of topics, such as psychometric functions, adaptive procedures, signal detection measures, scaling methods, and statistical model comparisons. The book serves as an invaluable source of information about psychophysics for researchers and optometrists, as well as for psychology and neuroscience students, on both the graduate and undergraduate level.Large variety of analytical methods explained for the non-expertNovel classification scheme for psychophysics experiments New software package for collecting and analyzing psychophysical data Pros and cons of different psychophysical procedures Practical tips for designing psychophysical experiments

At some point I needed to learn psychophysics for my research into visual perception and the only accessible way was through reading papers in the field or learning from supervisors, peers or mentors. That way, I managed to learn bits and pieces and use that knowledge to get results. However, one lucky day I stumbled across this book on Internet after finding authors' freely available Matlab toolbox, called Palamides, that accompanies this book. The book helped me understand thoroughly many concepts that I used to use blindly and put together bits and pieces of knowledge of psychophysics that I acquired previously. The Matlab toolbox made it simple for me to try out various methodologies and concepts while working through a chapter. This facilitated my understanding of a topic on the practical level. I find the authors have done an excellent job at synthesizing a vast field of psychophysics, that generated a huge amount of research for more than a century, into a clear, cohesive, accessible and practical book. I currently use it both as a textbook for myself (there is still plenty to learn about psychophysics) and as a reference manual for Palamedes toolbox.

As a side note, I also find the Palamides toolbox that accompanies the book to be a very nice piece of software that is carefully designed and well implemented (I say this is a former software engineer).

I have been recommending this book to many of my colleagues, some of whom are seasoned researchers and some are just venturing into the awesome discipline of psychophysics.

There are only very few books on psychophysics and the Practical Introduction of Kingdom and Prins really is a must have for everybody interessted in the field. While the focus is on visual psychophysics most of the concept also apply for other sensory systems. Nevertheless, the many visual examples help to understand the general concepts very well.
