Anesthesia for endoscopic assessment and treatment of airway problems in infants and children requires a systematic .

Anesthesia for endoscopic assessment and treatment of airway problems in infants and children requires a systematic and thoughtful approach. The anesthesiologist and otolaryngologist should have a sound knowledge of the causes of airway obstruction. The anesthesiologist must be aware of the instrumentation likely to be used and the endoscopist must be well informed about the principles of anesthesia.

Laryngospasm is a common complication of inhalation anesthesia in children. Laryngospasm is defined as glottic closure caused by reflex constriction of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. 27 If not treated quickly laryngospasm makes ventilation of a patient's lungs difficult and can lead to hypercarbia, hypoxia, cardiac collapse, and death. Obviously, children with serious medical or neurologic problems or a history of significant and recurrent neonatal apnea are exceptions to this recommendation.
