Description

John Ray is a life-long fan of Apple products; he has been an avid Mac user since its inception in 1984. This book combines text about the look of menus and windows on the MacBook with a lot of tiny pictures of same.

John Ray is a life-long fan of Apple products; he has been an avid Mac user since its inception in 1984. He relies on OS X both at work and at home because it is a robust, flexible platform for programming, networking, and design. Over the past 15 years, John has written books on OS X, iOS development, Linux, web development, networking, and computer security. SO - while you are adjured to look at the picture, you sometimes need a magnifying glass. There is wasted space on graphic boxes on the pages.

This is the most useful book on Lion I have found after 7 months on a new macbook pro. I have read many of the other intermediate level lion books and found them wanting. Ray's Lion covers the useful stuff without losing you in detail, humorous side journeys, rush-to-press errors, or leaving out essentials. If I upgrade to Mountain Lion in 6 months, I will buy Ray's book on that.

Other os x books that have helped me switch back from Windows are: Iwork 09 portable genius for Pages and Numbers iWork '09 Portable Genius; Iphoto 11 missing manual (but I am buying Jim Heid's iphoto 11 for review) iPhoto '11: The Macintosh iLife Guide to using iPhoto with OS X Lion and iCloud; ipod missing manual which covers the touch.

I need books that accurately cover what most users NEED to know for effective use. Anything else is fluff or dangerous errors.

I was lucky enough to find this book on amazon they were asking a astronomical price for it at other stores. Having just got my MacBook Pro this passed Christmas this book has been extremely helpful for me to learn and trouble shoot anything I could possibly think of for my computer. It's easy to understand and great for quick referencing. Thank you!

Love this Book , so well explained in detail, easy to understand for young and old.
I refer to this Book quite often, I do not require to ring apple for advise, it is there in the book .
great

Nothing terribly wrong with this book, but the David Pogue Missing Manual book for Mavericks (and the soon to be released Yosemite Missing Manual) is more thorough, better organized, and more helpful overall.

An enjoyable read. Clean type with good and easy to follow instuctions. Written on high quality paper. Only critcism is that some of the reference pictures are so small that you can not read them. Isn't that what this instructual book is all about?

I have a desktop Mac but wanted my husband to have his own desktop Mac. We are both extremely pleased with the MacBook and glad that our son, a Mac expert, recommended that we buy one that had been reconditioned by Apple.

...VERY basic. Unless you have never used a computer, this book isn't going to help much.
I should rephrase this...if you never used a Macbook, this might help.
Good book, just more basic than what I wanted...
I was looking for a read that would help me make a smooth transition from a PC to a Mac. This book provided me with how to do compared to how I use to do. The information was easy to follow and was well written. The information was provided in a format that used illustrations and examples which made it much easier to follow. Very newbie friendly and made things easier for the newcomer to the Mac World.
