Position of southern McArthur Basin deep. The sequence in the S half of the basin, the subject of this bulletin, is divided by regional unconformities into four stratigraphic groups.

Geology of the southern McArthur Basin, Northern Territory ( Australia). The McArthur Basin contains mainly mid-Proterozoic sedimentary rocks that form a platform cover sequence near the E edge of the North Australian Craton. The rocks are gently folded and faulted, unmetamorphosed, and appear to have been deposited in mostly shallow environments in an intracratonic basin, which at times was dominated by a prominent N-trending half-graben - the Batten Trough.

The McArthur, Balma (new name) and Habgood Groups are thick (up to . km) correlative sequences of shallow water evaporitic carbonates, mudstones and sandstones that are exposed largely within the Batten, and southern and northern Walker Fault Zones (Batten and Walker Troughs) of the McArthur Basin respectively. Two significant hiatuses are now recognised within the Balma Group (base of Vaughton Siltstone and base of Yarrawirrie Formation) and these may represent ed sequence boundaries which may correlate with similar local hiatuses within the McArthur Group such as at the base of the Teena Dolomite and Lynott Formation respectively.
