In the windows of the barrack huts, on the steps of the dormitory blocks, the prisoners were sitting up, roused for a few minutes by the memory of food. Jim left the foyer of G Block, and found Mr Maxted still holding the wooden handles of the food cart. Having made the effort twenty minutes earlier to lift the handles, he had exhausted his powers of decision. The former architect and entrepreneur, who had represented so much that Jim most admired about Shanghai, had been sadly drained by his years in Lunghua.

The work of JG Ballard could well be defined in terms of an epigraph from his novel The Drought (1965, now reissued together with three other early books), where the character Ransome is made to say: 'I've always thought of life as a kind of disaster area. Empire of the Sun has the suthority of experience. If it lacks the imaginative resonance of Ballard's other works, it more than makes up for this by the impressive quality of its matter-of-fact reporting. Here, one is made to feel, is the original disaster area from which all Ballard's works of pure fiction have drawn their inspiration.

Empire of the Sun is a 1984 novel by English writer J. G. Ballard; it was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Like Ballard's earlier short story "The Dead Time" (published in the anthology Myths of the Near Future), it is essentially fiction but draws extensively on Ballard's experiences in World War II. The name of the novel is derived from the etymology of the name for Japan.

Why I've bothered to read this book last of all J. Ballards books I can't tell you. I have all his books now and this has given me so much insight to his world view

Why I've bothered to read this book last of all J. I have all his books now and this has given me so much insight to his world view. To go through all that as a child and come out sane? Ah God bless you MR Ballard you did the world a favor by writing all of these beautiful books.

Empire of the Sun draws on my experiences in Shanghai, China, during the Second World War, and in Lunghua . Civilian Assembly Centre) where I was interned from 1942-45. For the most part this novel is based on events I observed during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai and within the camp at Lunghua. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor took place on Sunday morning, 7 December 1941, but as a result of time differences across the Pacific Date Line it was then already the morning of Monday, 8 December in Shanghai.

Empire of the Sun - J. Ballard. He would finish doping his balsa-wood aircraft and complete another chapter of the manual entitled How to Play Contract Bridge that he was writing in a school exercise book. After years spent listening to his mother’s bridge parties, trying to extract any kind of logic from the calls of One diamond, Pass, Three Hearts, Three No Trumps, Double, Redouble, he had prevailed on her to teach him the rules and had even mastered the conventions, a code within a code of a type that always intrigued Jim.
