Port Nolloth is a town and small domestic seaport in the Namaqualand region on the northwestern coast of South Africa, 144 kilometres (89 mi) northwest of Springbok. It is the seat of the Richtersveld Local Municipality. The port was previously a transshipment point for copper from the Okiep mines, and diamonds from the Namaqua coast. Since the 1970s the principal seagoing activities have been fishing and small-vessel tourism.

The deposit is located along the west coast of South Africa and is underlain by a metamorphosedMeso- and Neoproterozoic basement. Mineral geochemistry of individual zircon grains indicated that the entire population is continentally derived and is dominated by zircons from a felsicmagmatic source, some highly evolved, with minor contributions from a metamorphic and mafic provenance. The high concentration and quality of zircons in this deposit compared to similar placers globally is attributed to the proximity of a primary, zircon-rich provenance to a geomorphologically controlled depositional trap.

The Orange River estuary is one of the most far-away places in southern Africa, situated at the corner of South Africa and Namibia, at the place where the mighty Orange River flows into the Atlantic Ocean, and straddled by two mining towns, Alexander Bay and Oranjemund. The importance of this wetland for waterbirds was recognized in the early-1980s and it was subsequently designated as a Ramsar site, the only such site in the Northern Cape, and one of few in the world which cross an international boundary. At times the wetland supports more than 20,000 waterbirds, with almost 5000 terns being.

Along the west coast, rainfall decreases as one moves north from Cape Town to Namibia (greater than 700 mm to less than 100 mm). The south-west coast is subject to southerly winds in summer and rain-bearing westerly winds in winter. The South coast rainfall is moderate and variable (400 to 1 000 mm), with a maximum in the Garden Route area, which experiences year-round rainfall. Ocean Currents: The oceanic setting of South Africa is strongly influenced by the Agulhas Current and the Benguela Current System. The east-west contrast is seen in the 7°C difference between the average annual temperature of Port Nolloth and Durban – both located at similar latitudes.

There is a small harbour, Port Nolloth, sixty miles south, but the Orange River floods cut it off from Oranjemund for months. The river, the biggest in Africa south of the Tropic of Capricorn, forms a vast muddy estuary, the mouth stopped up by innumerable sandbars. Since World War II, however, Oranjemund has been transformed by the bridging of the river: as our plane from Cape Town circled low over it the previous afternoon, Oranjemund was branded green on the dun flank of the desert.

The southeastern coast of South Africa's Cape Province underwent complex geomorphic evolution during the late Cenozoic, leaving a variety of erosional forms and a detailed, complementary record of distinctive sediments. The latter include several new lithostratigraphic units and paleosol horizons. An almost ubiquitous planation surface, the 200-m Coastal Platform, is associated with the fanglomeratic and deltaic Keurbooms Formation (late Tertiary?)
