The unspoilt country town is famous for its status as the first book-town of the UK, with an economy now largely built on second-hand bookshops, and has been the home of the Hay literary festival since 1988. Hay lies perched at the northern tip of the Black Mountains; an important strategic position during the Middle Ages. The most famous of Welsh castle towns, Caernarfon stands on the shores of the Menai Strait looking across to Anglesey. St David’s is the smallest city in the UK and has the feel of a small town. It’s located deep in Pembrokeshire close to the coast on St David’s Peninsula.
