Most fertilizers have some tendency to form agglomerates (caking) during storage. These accelerated caking tests are of short duration and for this reason can be used in fertilizer granulation plants on a quality control basis. This caking is usually effected by: chemical composition, particle structure, moisture content hygroscopic properties, mechanical strength, product temperature, storage time and pressure. The aim of this study is to provide fundamental information on the performance of POLY4, a trademarked granulated polyhalite fertilizer by Sirius Minerals Plc, under long term storage as a fertilizer and in NPK blends.

A fertilizer (American English) or fertiliser (British English; see spelling differences) is any material of natural or synthetic origin (other than liming materials) that is applied to soil or to plant tissues to supply one or more plant nutrients . .

A fertilizer (American English) or fertiliser (British English; see spelling differences) is any material of natural or synthetic origin (other than liming materials) that is applied to soil or to plant tissues to supply one or more plant nutrients essential to the growth of plants.

Fertilizers can be defined as a chemical or natural substance added to soil to increase its fertility. The most classic form is solid fertilizer found in granulated or powdered forms. The next most common form is liquid fertilizer. Fertilizers contain nutrients that promote plant growth. It has some advantages like its effectiveness is immediate and its coverage is wide.

Chemical fertilizers are compounds containing high concentration of nutrients required for plant growth. Apart from the three main constituent elements, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, plants require substantial quantity of nutrients. These nutrients are classified as primary nutrients, secondary nutrients, and micronutrients.

Fertilizers replace the chemical components that are taken from the soil by growing plants. However, they are also designed to improve the growing potential of soil, and fertilizers can create a better growing environment than natural soil. They can also be tailored to suit the type of crop that is being grown. Typically, fertilizers are composed of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compounds.
