Between 1973 and 1980, then book publisher Time-Life Books published a series of 27 books relating to the American Old West during its heyday and creation. They followed the series with an additional 31 books that were all reprints of popular books released during the days of the Old West, and later, in 1990, a single volume which combined information from the original series.

The Old West is both a series of 26 books published by Time-Life between 1973 and 1979, and a single volume compendium released in 1990 which combines information from all 26 books. The books were a definitive and comprehensive recreation of the west as it really was, and in 1980, a 27th book, Master Index, was created to document the usage of each and every name, place, item and whatnot, throughout each of the 26 books in the series.

A number of years ago, we purchased The Old West set from Time-Life, and this book was missing. The collection is wonderful, and I was happy to now complete the set.

I understand the book is old, but I received other books from the same series that really were "like new"
The Spanish West is one of twenty-seven volumes in the popular Time-Life book series The Old West. This volume portrays the influence of the Spanish language and culture on the Southwest quadrant of North America as well as the story of how the Spanish West became the American West. The conquest of the Aztecs, the search for the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola, the exploration/settlement of the Southwest, Mexican independence, the Texas Revolution, and the California missions and ranches are among the many topics portrayed in this book. Francisco Coronado, Father Serra, Miguel Hidalgo, Mariano Vallejo, and General Santa Anna are among the prominent individuals profiled in the narrative. The Spanish quest for gold, diplomacy/conflict between the Spanish and Native Americans, isolation of the Spanish settlements in the Borderlands, and the conflict between Anglo-Americans and the Spanish empire/Mexican nation are the prevalent themes of this volume. As with other books in this series, numerous photographs and illustrations supplement the text. This is an informative and interesting book but I thought the narrative was a little dry at times. Still, The Spanish West is an important volume in the Old West series as it looks at the events in Texas, California, New Mexico, and the Mexican War from the Spanish/Mexican perspective. Moreover, I found this book to be a good companion to The Texans and The Mexican War which are two other books from the Old West series. In sum, The Spanish West is a good survey of a distinctive feature of both the American West and the Old West.
