This is a superb look into both the history of the USA and the American character. National Geographic provides a largely thematic look at the nation's history with a photo-journalistic approach. The book provides many interesting photographs drawn from the files of National Geographic, plus many artistic renditions for the history that occurred before cameras. There is also a host of stories, descriptions, and anecdotes, all written in nicely-readable prose. Among the themes covered are the 13 Colonies, and independence circa 1776, slavery, westward expansion, the civil war, industrialization and immigration, the Great Depression, War, post-war growth, etc. Readers come away with a greater understanding of the nation, its strengths, flaws, and character. This large coffee-table book is great for learning and is well worth your time.
