Giorgio Caproni (Livorno, 7 January 1912 – 22 January 1990, Rome) was an Italian poet, literary critic and translator, especially from French. Caproni left Livorno at the age of ten to complete his primary studies in Genoa, where he studied first music, then literature, and where he wrote his first poems. After participating in World War II as a member of the Italian resistance movement, he spent many years as an elementary school teacher.

This paper focuses Giorgio Caproni’s translation activity and its workshop, starting from an unpublished version of Gustave’s Flaubert Cahier intime (posthumous, 1965), accomplished between 1966 and 1972, now held in the Contemporary Archive A. Bonsanti of Gabinetto G. P. Vieusseux. In particular, it analyzes two of Caproni’s marginal notes on preparatory materials: one is taken from Giacomo Leopardi’s Thoughts, the other one from Edmond de Goncourt’s novel La Faustin (1882)

At present, I feel closer in spirit to Caproni (1912-1990) than any other poet of his generation.
