For Jackie, A Guiding Light. When I was commissioned to write Prime Suspect for Granada Television, I had no notion that it would change my life. I had been very successful writing a series called Widows, but it had not resulted in offers of work that I felt excited about. The plot of Widows pivoted on four men attempting a dangerous armed robbery, and all died when the explosives held in their truck exploded.

In this book, LaPlante captures that same dynamic with equal brilliancy . I have read all of Lynda La Plante's Ana Travis novels, which I loved. Prime Suspect 2 was just as good.

In this book, LaPlante captures that same dynamic with equal brilliancy through the the expertly developed character study of Tennison, a woman consumed in the pursuit of her career, but whose personal life is somewhat in shambles as a result. The suspense and character development in each of her novels is superb. I thought I would try these earlier novels. Although these books deal with very gruesome and troubling crimes, the book focusses on the lead character DCI Tennison's flaws and attributes and her difficulties in dealing with a sexist police culture.
