As he did so brilliantly in his bestselling book, jewish literacy,Joseph . I first became interested in the Bible as a child.

I first became interested in the Bible as a child. It began after watching the movie The Ten Commandments. I loved this larger than life epic and I started reading the Bible. I have discovered that the Bible does not have the razzle dazzle special effects of a Cecil B. De Mille film, but when a person carefully watches the Tem Commandments, one can see it's all hype.

..for Christians and Jews. Mind you, it was written by Rabbi Telushkin so it is aimed at Jews. There are fundamentalist Christian books out there that turn the 'old testament' into a Jesus thing. Some believe Jesus is God so the just replace God with Jesus. Anything by Telushkin is great. Test out The Code of Jewish Ethics, one of my favorite books. Another book you don't have to be Jewish to love and admire.

This is the most insightful and powerful commentary I have ever come across on the Old Testament. (It is written from a Jewish perspective, of course, so my expectations were commensurate with that.) I have a Ph.D. in theology, have written many books and have read many commentaries, but always in connection with a particular endeavor of study. Not so with this book. I read it often for the sheer pleasure and edification that I derive from the author's keen insight and knowledge of the Hebrew language and biblical culture and history. He has illumined more passages for me than any five other commentaries combined that I can think of. The book is worth the price for his exegesis of the 3rd commandment alone. This book is a treasure in my library.

I have never read the Bible. I've picked it up and attempted reading it, but, like so many others, I just couldn't go all the way. A friend mentioned this book and I can report to you this is an excellent book; one worth reading if you never read the Bible or you are new to the Bible or have any interest in reading the Bible... whatever religion you may or may not be.

Most of us were brought up with scattered information about the bible. Teluskin systematically and succinctly writes about all of the major and many of the minor parts of the bible and goes through the origins and practices of major holidays as well. Each piece can be read in a few minutes but captures and conveys the significance of that book, chapter or figure. It is well worth having available to step out of our day to day and reconnect to our background. Can be read by Jews and non-Jews with equal value.

Had been meaning to read the bible for ever and ever since leaving Cheder, but found it too daunting (boring?) to grasp it in it's entirety. Now it is as if I have received a personal guided tour, not just of the plot highlights but also of the (jewish) meaning of what am reading - and so well written, I can almost see the glimt of fun (jewish humor), wisdom and inclusion entre-nous in Joseph Telushkin's eyes.
