First lady of Versailles book. Lucy Norton doesn't quite have the same populist historian's touch that Fraser does, but this by no means diminishes what she has written here.
First lady of Versailles book. I was constantly aware of the fickle hand of Fate - that 'star-crossed' quality - hovering over the subject's too-short life. Tiny Adelaide, thrust into the glitter of Versailles by an accident of birth, and instantly charming the king. Louis, her husband, immediately loves her, but Adelaide, like an 18th Century Scarlett O'Hara, cannot see the wood for the trees.
