Excellent books; interesting, mystery, fun. No bad language or bad attitude and always end happy. Hard to find books like the MEG series these days.

'Meg and the Ghost of Hidden Springs' is the 4th book in a series of children's books about a young girl called Meg Duncan. Each of the books in the series can be read separately though, you don't need to read them in order. When I was little, I owned 4 of the books in this series, naturally they were Dutch translations as I couldn't speak English at the time. I was about 10 years old when I first read them, about the same age as Meg is in the books.
However, having moved a couple of times throughout the years, the books were lost. But I managed to obtain a relatively cheap copy from Amazon, and I happily set about reading the story again. It's the original English version I read this time, but it has the same illustrations my previous Dutch version had. The book smells as if it has been hidden in a dusty attic for years, which is exactly the way a book should smell! After all, this book was first printed in 1978 so the story is almost 40 years old anyway.
The main character is a young girl called Meg Duncan, who lives in a small town called Hidden Springs in Virginia, USA and whose favorite pastime is solving mysteries. In this book, the mystery concerns a haunted house and the ghost which is said to live there. Throughout the story, Meg naturally solves the riddle, helped by her best friend Kerry.
All in all, nothing extraordinary there as there are no doubt dozens of children's books about ghosts. So why did this book leave such an imprint? Why can I still remember the story almost word for word after all these years? I guess it's the tragical story which is the central point of this book which does it: the death of 'Little Kathleen' and more importantly, the solution to the riddle, the reason why Kathleen died in the first place.
It's this, more than anything, which gripped me. I remember it totally shocked and surprised me as a child, and I felt an overall sadness for Kathleen and her older sister. In a way, both of them were victims here. Even after all these years, the part where Mrs Partlow (an elegant old lady who lives near Meg) tells about the death of Kathleen still gives me goosebumps, and the ending will always bring tears to my eyes.
So I really see no other option but to give this book 5 stars. Even though it's a bit outdated, the story is timeless and should be enjoyed by children all over the world. I'm going to try to find the other books in this series, as I want to read them all again and try to recapture some of that lost nostalgia...

I first read this book when I was ten years old. This is my favorite childhood book. I found it at a garage sale, and have only found one other in the Meg series. I loved this! I read it over and over again and even made a game for a school project based on the book. It's a Nancy Drew meets a typical preteen girl. Wonderful. Beautiful. I'm so happy just to see this book! I've got to track down the rest of the series and read them - and I'm twenty now! =o)

This is another in the series of Meg mysteries, possibly published in the early '70s. The storyline is eerie -- Meg discovers that an old mansion is occupied by what seems to be a restless spirit. The ghost is a young girl who comitted suicide decades earlier after no one showed up for a fancy party she gave. Meg, with the help of her best friend Kerry, her father and others in the community, unravels the mystery. This book is entertaining and surprisingly complex, particularly in how the ghost is unmasked.
Crazy Crazy
My dad and I went to the book and trade store and bought this treasure! It only took me 2 days to read . And it was so delightful! Meg and Kerry have such a kind hearted spirit in this book. MEG is interesting in this because she is, STRONG,and can Solve Puzzles! Kerry is interesting because she is the , Kind , and Helpful apprentice . Read this book! It's definitely not a waste of you time.
This was one of the first books I read when I was a little girl. I loved it, and read it several times. I would definitely reccommend it to young people, girls & boys, who enjoy a good ghost story!
