The style of the book seems slightly old fashioned when compared to more modern works, written in the 1970s it is not quite a cozy mystery but nowhere near as brutally gruesome as a lot of other murder mystery novels. The decision made by the author to set the story in the fictional Glen Shira but to tie it so strongly into it's setting in reality seems rather peculiar and was mildly distracting.

This remarkable book-the fruit of almost two decades of study-traces in compelling fashion the changes in Western attitudes toward death and dying from the earliest Christian times to the present day. A truly landmark study.
