The Phoenix and the Tortoise was called by Morgan Gibson in his book Kenneth Rexroth, much more coherent in style and theme than Rexroth’s earlier work while focusing less on experimentation and politics. Instead, the book initiated a study of the ‘integral person’ who, through love, discovers his responsibility for all in a world of war, cold war, and nuclear terror.

After half a century of writing some of the most remarkable poems of love and solitude, prophetic revolt and philosophical contemplation in modern literature, Kenneth Rexroth has emerged, I believe, as one of America's wisest living poets. I have written this book to put in order my thoughts concerning the poet who, more than any other, has helped me understand poetry as communion, communication of vision, and communal sacrament.
