Description

Hyland created a cloth-covered hardback with cover imagery restricted to a silver foil-blocked image of Bond’s infamous Walther PPK (shown here with silencer). A subtle diamond pattern is debossed on to the boards, which combined with deep burgundy endpapers evokes the discerning elegance of Bond’s world.

Quantum of Solace" was chosen as the title for the 2008 Bond film, but otherwise the film had no connection to the story. From a View to a Kill" provided the title (but little else) for the 1985 film, A View to a Kill. According to Henry Chancellor's James Bond: The Man and His World, "From A View to a Kill" was initially intended to be the backstory for Hugo Drax, the villain of Moonraker. The remaining story in the collection, "Quantum of Solace", is one of only three Ian Fleming James Bond stories that has never been adapted as a comic strip. The other two are "The Property of a Lady" and "007 in New York.

Quantum of Solace, the amount of comfort. The "For Your Eyes Only" book is the anthology which includes the short story "Quantum of Solace" from which the movie takes its title. 16 of 23 found this interesting Interesting?

Quantum of Solace, the amount of comfort. Yes, I suppose you can say that all love and friendship is based in the end on that. Human beings are very insecure. When the other person not only makes you feel insecure, but actually seems to want to destroy you, it's obviously the end. The Quantum of Solace stands at zero. You've got to get away to save yourself. 16 of 23 found this interesting Interesting? Yes.

Quantum of Solace" was based on a story told to Fleming by his neighbour and lover Blanche Blackwell about a real-life police inspector, who Fleming turned into the civil servant, Philip Masters. As thanks for the story, Fleming bought Blackwell a Cartier watch. Fleming wrote the story in the style of W Somerset Maugham and this was Fleming's homage to a writer he greatly admired.

This collection of Ian Fleming short stories is a must have for any Bond fan. I have been discovering Fleming since the release of the film "Casino Royale" and have found his books to be not only thrilling but also very well written. His prose is as lean, hard and ruthless as James Bond himself. He is a joy to read.

Here in "Quantum of Solace" I was not disappointed. All the stories are wonderful and it is amazing to see how Fleming can pack so much drama and excitement into a few pages just as he does in his full-length novels.

Among the best short stories, at least my favorites are;

"Risico" has a wonderful Roman setting and a surprise villain, just so much fun.

"Quantum of Solace" is an incredible tale of the death of love told over cocktails.

"View To A Kill", Catapults the reader into a trill ride which is very cinematic and a great story.

"Property of a Lady" shows the cool everyday aspect of what being a Secret Service agent is about.

"The Living Daylights". Here the cold winter cityscape of cold war Berlin is wonderfully described and a little romance too.

And of special note you can find a scrumptious recipe for scrambled eggs in "007 In New York" (The character of Solange in the film of Casino Royale seems to have come from this story)

All the stories are wonderful, and this is a must have for any Bond fan. It is fascinating to pick out scenes from the stories that have ended up being incorporated into various films in the franchise, some intact with their stories titles and some buried into a plot for a film not related to the title. Such is the case with "Risico". You will have fun just as I did in the "Ah ha" moment of realization on this point.

So Bond is back in the movies now in a bigger way than ever before thanks to the reinvention of the franchise and to Daniel Craig who is by far the nearest to Bond as he appears in the books. And here in "Quantum of Solace" you have the opportunity to enter into his world by way of mere vignettes where you will find no solace for James Bond but a lot of adventure fun, and fine writing.

If you are a hardcore James Bond fan, this is a good addition to your collection. If you are strictly a fan of the gadgets and the glamour, you might be let down. Book is a collection of short stories and range in way of intrigue, drama, violence and character building. Its a great, 360' view of James Bond, the person. If you only care about the kinds of stories you see in James Bond Movies, you might be let down at times.

This collection is all nine of Ian Fleming's James Bond short stories published as a movie tie-in under the title of one of them: QUANTUM OF SOLACE. Since they have never been grouped together in a single volume QUANTUM OF SOLACE is not only a nice find but a bargain, a truly generous offering heretofore uncollected. I'd snap up a copy or two now before it becomes extinct. The Thomas & Mercer editions of the entire Bond series is the new line as of 2012; if consumers want these nine stories under that handsome imprint they'll have to buy two books instead of one (FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and OCTOPUSSY) to get all the material in QUANTUM OF SOLACE.

That material is uniformly excellent by the way, including the two or three times Bond is not on assignment. No one writes the iconic secret agent authentically except Fleming. He wrote quite literate prose, casually demonstrating his elegant wordsmith mastery here even in the throwaway '007 in New York.' When rereading 'The Property of a Lady' I was amazed at the suspense generated by Fleming while keeping Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on a tight leash throughout an espionage tale without a Walther PPK or strained silk blouse in sight. 'Risico,' my favorite Bond short story since first reading it in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY in the early 60s, never fails to be exciting despite knowing what's going to happen: Bond's footrace along a beach to escape three gunmen and taking off his tie while he runs is priceless. The other secret service stories in this volume, 'From a View to a Kill,' 'For Your Eyes Only' and 'The Living Daylights,' are also very good, classic Fleming.

I'm no different than most readers who prefer Bond in a novel rather than the shorter form, but it is a lot of fun to see how Fleming downsized things in these nine pieces ranging from short short to novelette in length. Again I urge readers and collectors to obtain QUANTUM OF SOLACE while it's still available, you are getting two books for the price of one.

I have all of the other Ian Fleming Bond books, so I had to get this one to round out my collection. This is a collection of short stories, so they're certainly not as well developed as the full Bond novels are. Still, I enjoyed it. If you're a Bond collector, you'll probably want to own this.

Interesting short story and a new dimension for Bond.

Admittadly these are short stories and most feel like ideas that Fleming had but hadn't thought through completely so he left them short stories. There are a couple of standout stories though.
All the short stories that inspired the newer movies after all the novels had been exhausted. If you truly are a James Bond fan, this needs to be in your library.
